Your PrestaShop takes 4 seconds to load a product page. It looks like a technical issue. In reality, it's a revenue issue.
Google has measured that every second of delay in loading an e-commerce site reduces conversions by 7%. For a store generating €10,000 a month, a 2-second delay means €1,400 in lost sales every month. That's €16,800 a year — not due to lack of traffic, not due to wrong prices, but because the site is slow.
This article does two things: it calculates the real economic damage caused by PrestaShop's slowness, and explains why the problem can't be solved by optimizing, but only by changing the architecture.
The calculation nobody shows you
Let's take real numbers. A PrestaShop e-commerce with these characteristics:
1,000 visitors per month
Current conversion rate: 2% (20 orders)
Average order value: €80
Monthly revenue: €1,600
The site takes 4 seconds to load. Every second above 2 seconds costs 7% of conversions. You're 2 seconds above the threshold — you're losing 14% of potential conversions.
With a fast site, the conversion rate would be 2.3% instead of 2% — 23 orders instead of 20. Three extra orders a month at €80 = €240 a month in lost revenue. €2,880 a year. Not due to a lack of customers — due to technical slowness.
On an e-commerce doing €10,000 a month, the same calculation produces a €16,800 annual loss. On one doing €50,000 a month: €84,000.
These aren't theoretical numbers. They're the real cost of a system that wasn't designed for speed.
Why PrestaShop is structurally slow
PrestaShop was born in 2007 with an architecture designed to handle complex catalogues — thousands of variants, intricate pricing logic, modules for every feature. This complexity comes at a price: every product page generates dozens of database queries, the Smarty template engine is slower than modern systems, and every installed module adds code the server has to execute before responding to the user.
The result is a TTFB — Time to First Byte, the time between the user's request and the server's first response — that rarely drops below 800ms without aggressive caching. And caching on PrestaShop is a problem in itself: it requires ongoing configuration, breaks with updates, and doesn't solve the issue of traffic spikes.
You can optimize the database, enable Redis, configure OPcache, install a CDN. You can bring TTFB down to 400ms with weeks of technical work. But you're fighting against the system's own architecture — and every new module you install starts the cycle over again.

The hidden cost of maintenance
Slowness isn't the only cost. PrestaShop requires ongoing maintenance to stay stable and secure.
Core updates, module updates, resolving conflicts when an update breaks something — on a live e-commerce this requires an available developer, time taken away from sales, and the constant risk that something will break at the worst possible moment. A Black Friday with the site down is a scenario anyone who has managed a PrestaShop store is familiar with.
Security vulnerabilities are the other problem. In 2025-2026, over 230 vulnerabilities were recorded in PrestaShop modules — including payment and checkout modules. Every installed module is a potential entry point for attacks that can compromise customer data and bring sales to a halt.
The alternative: an e-commerce designed for speed
KeideaCMS is a proprietary Italian CMS with an e-commerce module built into the core. It's not PrestaShop with plugins — it's a system built from scratch with speed as an architectural requirement.
TTFB is under 200ms by architecture, not by optimization. Images are automatically converted to WebP on upload. There are no third-party modules adding uncontrolled code. The admin panel is physically separate from the frontend — attacks that target PrestaShop through the back office have no attack surface here.
What the e-commerce module includes
Product catalogue with unlimited variants — size, colour, material, any combination of attributes. Each variant has its own price, its own availability, its own stock tracked in real time with a complete audit of every movement.
Native cart and checkout, no plugins required. Integrated payments with PayPal, bank transfer and cash on delivery — Stripe and Scalapay coming soon. Full order management from the admin panel, with a history of every status and every operation tracked.
Zero commission on sales — your revenue is yours. No percentage withheld by the platform regardless of volume.
An order engine that does more than PrestaShop
KeideaCMS's architectural advantage over PrestaShop isn't just speed. It's that the same order engine natively handles four different types of business on the same system:
E-commerce for physical products with variants and stock. Booking of reservable resources with time slots — clinics, professional practices, accommodation facilities. Rental with availability calendar, periodic rates and security deposit management. On-demand services with integrated quoting.
A company that sells products and also offers installation or support can manage everything on a single platform, with a single cart and a single payment system. On PrestaShop this requires separate modules, custom integrations and maintenance spread across multiple components.
The 3-year financial comparison
| Cost item | PrestaShop | KeideaCMS Business |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated hosting (3 years) | ~€2,160 | Included |
| Premium modules (3 years) | ~€1,800 | Zero |
| Maintenance and updates (3 years) | ~€2,400 | Included |
| Emergency interventions (3 years) | ~€1,500 (estimate) | Zero |
| Platform fee (3 years) | €0 | €3,564 (€99/month) |
| Total over 3 years | ~€7,860 + lost sales | €3,564 all-inclusive |
The comparison does not include sales lost due to slowness — which we calculated above and which, over three years for an average e-commerce, far exceed the cost of migration.
Migration: what happens to your data and your SEO
The question that keeps many e-commerce sites stuck on the wrong platform is: "what if I lose my Google rankings?" It's a legitimate concern that has a precise technical answer.
Migrating from PrestaShop to KeideaCMS preserves every URL that has organic traffic. For every URL that changes structure, a permanent 301 redirect is implemented — Google transfers the accumulated authority to the new page. SEO metadata — title tags, meta descriptions, structured data — is extracted directly from the PrestaShop database and recreated natively in KeideaCMS.
Product catalog, customers, order history, images with alt text — everything migrates. The migration takes place on a staging environment while your store remains online. The switch to the new system requires just a few minutes of DNS change.
